William and Laura Woodward were my paternal grandparents. William was born 28th September 1871 in London Road, Flamstead, Hertfordshire, he married Laura in 1897 at Flamstead. His occupation is listed on the 1901 census as, 'mechanical engineer', I always thought that he worked for a gas company in Markyate at sometime in his working life, but I am not 100% sure of this. He would have been 65 when I was born and in those days it was a case being seen and not heard, so it was unlikely that I talked to him very much, he died in Luton Bedforshire on 8th February 1950. His job title and the nature of his work meant that he had the ability and capability to make these engines.
